Dr. Saxe will discuss the tension between ease of use and security. The current paradigm of username/password approach was designed for a more benign environment, and while it scores high on ease of use it is fading fast in terms of security. The other current approach of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) was designed for a relatively static environment, and in the high-flux Web2.0 environment its poor ease of use causes users themselves to compromise its security. Adapting security to Web2.0 requires a new paradigm that avoids the rigidity of PKI and provides a more secure authentication mechanism. Dr. Saxe-s presentation addresses the new generation of USB devices and crypto services that finally make a high level of security very easy to deploy and use.
