LOS GATOS, CA — (Marketwire) — 03/28/12 — SuVolta, Inc., the developer of PowerShrink low-power CMOS technology that cuts power consumption in ICs by 50 to 90 percent, today announced that it was named the winner of the prestigious IEEE Spectrum 2012 Emerging Technology ACE Award. During the UBM Electronics Annual Creativity in Electronics (ACE) Awards event held yesterday, SuVolta-s Deeply Depleted Channel (DDC) device technology was recognized by IEEE Spectrum as the emerging technology having the greatest potential to achieve financial success in broad commercial application. In addition, SuVolta was a finalist for the 2012 Startup of the Year ACE Award and the 2012 Design Team of the Year ACE Award.
Reducing power consumption is generally regarded as the biggest challenge in chip design today, a problem which limits the functionality and battery lifetime in portable products including smartphones, tablets and notebooks. SuVolta won the IEEE Spectrum Emerging Technology ACE Award because of the significant impact its has on enabling dramatic reductions in IC power consumption while maintaining circuit performance.
“The electronics industry is clamoring for ways to offer higher performance chips that use less power. SuVolta-s DDC technology is a game-changer because IC designers can include far more advanced functions while still fitting within tight power envelopes,” said Dr. Bruce McWilliams, president and CEO of SuVolta. “We are deeply honored to receive the distinctive IEEE Spectrum award which further validates the significance of our low-power technology and the advantages it brings future generations of chip designs.”
SuVolta-s technologists redesigned the planar, bulk CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) transistor and related circuits, radically lowering the power consumption without the need for new fabrication equipment or design infrastructure.
SuVolta-s DDC transistor technology and device structure enables scaling (reduction) of two of the most critical transistor parameters — scaling of supply voltage, and scaling of transistor size to the sub-20nm node and smaller. The DDC technology is a component of which applies across a wide range of integrated circuit (IC) products, including processors, SRAMs, and SOCs that are critical to today-s mobile products.
This year, EE Times- ACE Awards and EDN-s Innovation Awards have joined forces to honor the people and companies — the creators — behind the technologies and products that are changing the world of electronics and shaping the way we work, live, and play. The IEEE Spectrum Emerging Technology ACE Award is presented to the featured “Winners of Technology” company voted by an IEEE member reader panel as having the most promising potential to provide the greatest financial return from broad commercial application.
