ROCKVILLE, MD — (Marketwire) — 01/19/12 — MarketResearch.com has announced the addition of the new report “Nuclear Condensate and Feed Water Pumps – Global Market Size, Pricing, Regional Analysis and Competitive Landscape to 2020,” to their collection of Energy market reports. Condensate pumps are designed to operate in the severe conditions of nuclear power units. They are multistage pumps which pump the condensate accumulated in the condenser to low-pressure feed water heaters. The purpose of a condensate pump is to increase the pressure of the condensate from vacuum levels to about 350 pounds per square inch (psi) and to route the condensate from the condenser to low-pressure feed water heaters. The condensate is further passed to the feed water pump by way of increasing the pressure to the required level.
Nuclear feed water pumps transport feed water to a steam generator and are horizontal, single stage and centrifugal. Feed water pumps are designed to increase the pressure of the condensate, which is routed from the condensate pump through low-pressure feed water heaters. The feed water pump increases the water pressure from 350 psi to approximately 1,200 psi. The feed water from the pumps is then passed to the steam generator — or reactor in the case of a boiling water reactor (BWR) — through one stage of a high-pressure feed water heater. During large power uprates, the feed water pumps are re-rated or replaced, which results in increased power output from nuclear units. The feed water, also known as secondary coolant, passes around the outside tubes absorbing heat from the primary coolant, after which it boils and generates steam.
Despite increased concerns about the safety of nuclear power, the growing demand for electricity and new emission abatement targets have led to the resurgence of nuclear power. The Fukushima nuclear disaster has set a negative trend for social acceptance for nuclear power in some countries, such as Germany, which announced a complete phase out of its nuclear generation capacity by 2022. The Swiss cabinet ministry has also called for the decommissioning of the country-s five nuclear reactors and intends to replace them with new energy sources.
However, other countries have drawn experience from the accidents in Japan and Chernobyl, realizing the need to improve the design, construction, operation and maintenance of existing and future nuclear plants to avoid any form of radiation leakage. Demand from new and existing operational nuclear power stations is set to drive the condensate and feed water pump market in the long term. There are approximately 164 new nuclear reactors requiring condensate and feed water pumps scheduled to start commercial operation during the period 2011-2020. This is indicative of the increasing demand for condensate and feed water pumps worldwide due to the installation of new reactors. Moreover, there are over 150 reactors whose condensate or feed water pumps will reach the end of their 30-35 year lifespan during the period 2011-2020, which will also lead to significant demand for replacement pumps.
