TORONTO, ONTARIO — (Marketwire) — 10/07/11 — Sprint Nextel-s plan to deploy its own 4G LTE network next year will have a positive spin-off effect for Public Mobile and its customers. Sprint will be using G-Block spectrum to launch its own U.S. nationwide 4G LTE network. G-Block is the same band of spectrum used by Public Mobile. Public Mobile has built a wireless network with software defined radios which means the existing equipment can easily be upgraded to support LTE technology in the future.
Sprint-s move to deploy 4G LTE confirms that G-Block, which was added into LTE standards last summer, will soon be used in an operating network. Public Mobile, which led the world in commercialization of the G-Block spectrum, will now have the additional benefit of Sprint and its 52 million customers supporting the development of technology and handsets.
“Sprint-s announcement that it will launch 10 to 15 LTE devices next year changes the handset ecosystem and will give Public Mobile customers access to a much broader selection of devices as a result. The handset market is now wide open. This is great news for our customers,” said Brian O-Shaughnessy, Chief Technology Officer of Public Mobile. Added O-Shaughnessy, “This broadening of the handset ecosystem, in addition to our spectrum path will aid in Public Mobile-s move to LTE when the time is right.”
Last summer new capabilities were added to 4th generation wireless technology, known as LTE (“Long Term Evolution”). One of the significant additions to the standard was the inclusion of the G Band frequencies as a supported frequency in LTE, an important precursor to Sprint-s announcement. Public Mobile purchased its G-Block spectrum in 2008 and launched its wireless network in May 2010.
