NASHUA, NH — (Marketwired) — 09/15/16 — Dresner Advisory Services today published its 2016 Small and Mid-Sized Enterprise Business Intelligence Market Study, part of the Wisdom of Crowds® series of research. The report provides a focused, detailed examination of business intelligence usage and trends in small and mid-sized organizations (SMEs). It also discusses how those deployments and views differ from each other and from the larger organizations.
In this study, now in its fourth edition, “small enterprise” refers to an organization with between one and 100 employees, and “mid-sized enterprise” is an organization with between 101 and 1,000 employees. “Large enterprises” have more than 1,000 employees.
All organizations prioritize a wide span of BI technologies and initiatives, with high interest across the board in basic “nuts and bolts” technologies such as dashboards, data discovery, and reporting. However, where larger organizations place more importance in data warehousing, data mining, planning, and governance, the small organizations are more interested in cloud, open source, and social media analysis.
According to the report, small and mid-sized enterprises, which traditionally have smaller ranks of middle management, are most likely to target executives over other roles. They are also most likely to target customers with business intelligence. While operations and executive management are the largest drivers of BI at organizations of any size, within SMEs the sales, and to a lesser effect marketing functions, take bigger roles.
“Generally, we find small organizations are early adopters of business intelligence and have the highest estimates of BI success,” said Howard Dresner, founder and chief research officer at Dresner Advisory Services. “We also see that the current BI penetration is much higher, with more aggressive future plans, at small compared to large organizations.”
Wisdom of Crowds® research is based on data collected on usage and deployment trends, products, and vendors. Users in all roles and throughout all industries contributed to provide a complete view of realities, plans, and perceptions of the market.
