SEATTLE, WA — (Marketwired) — 11/04/15 — Today, announced findings from its second API Performance Report. In this issue, the company examines the reliability and responsiveness of primary social media APIs by region and how they impact the performance of cloud provider choices. One key takeaway from this report is that Facebook–s recent September outages negatively affected users across all locations and cloud providers.
The downtime experienced by Facebook in September dropped its reliability score from 100 percent in August to 97 percent, putting it far below the other platforms tested — Tumblr and Twitter. Facebook also had the slowest-performing API, more than 2.4 times slower, on average, than Twitter. These same results were found consistently across all cloud services tested in Europe, Asia and the US.
One unexpected finding of this report was that the choice of cloud provider had a measurable impact on social media API performance, equal to or greater than the impact of a user–s geographic location. Overall, Google Cloud offers the best performance across all regions, while Microsoft Azure has significant reliability and performance problems impacting every social network across every region. Latency for each platform also varied significantly between cloud providers, from a blistering 342ms for Twitter on AWS to a sluggish 1240ms for Facebook on Azure.
APImetrics recommends that developers take these differences and the location of their users into account when designing applications and choosing cloud providers.
“API performance issues can have enormous ramifications, but many developers and IT managers are monitoring them incorrectly or not at all,” said David O–Neill, CEO and co-founder of APImetrics. “Poor API performance is a leading indicator of potential application issues, so our goal is to give organizations actionable data that informs decisions about their applications, and helps them troubleshoot issues before users notice them.”
Social media APIs underpin many popular applications, allowing users to sign into accounts or share data with other services. This API Performance Report–s data is derived from the APImetrics analytics engine, which has been monitoring API performance since the beginning of 2014.
