Dresner Advisory Services Releases 2015 Collaborative Computing and Business Intelligence Market Study

NASHUA, NH — (Marketwired) — 04/30/15 — Dresner Advisory Services today published the 4th Edition of its Collaborative Computing and Business Intelligence Market Study, part of the Wisdom of Crowds® series of research. The report examines current and planned usage of collaborative technologies and collaborative Business Intelligence (BI). This is defined as the process where two or more individuals or organizations work together to develop a common understanding, which is then shared and used to build consensus in support of organizational decision-making.

According to the 2015 edition of the study, organizations that consider themselves successful at BI and take action on insight more often use collaborative BI tools. Sales and marketing and executive management are the two functions most likely to use collaboration features within a BI tool, and report the greatest use of file-sharing services. These two groups also report the greatest interest in enterprise collaborative frameworks.

“This marks the fourth year we–ve looked at collaboration and collaborative BI and we–re seeing some interesting patterns around usage and importance,” said Howard Dresner, founder and chief research officer at Dresner Advisory Services. “A large majority of respondents indicate that their organizations share information very effectively, with 24 percent reporting their organizations have –closed loop– processes and 60 percent having ad hoc, informal data sharing. Small and large organizations perceive the greatest value in collaborative BI.”

The 2015 collaborative survey included new questions around data storytelling. Across six data story-telling features, author highlighting was indicated as the most popular. Close to 80 percent of respondents to the survey say collaborative frameworks are critical, very important, or important to their plans, and seventy percent of respondents stated that all seven extended collaborative BI features covered in the survey are critical, very important, or important.

“BI vendor sentiment toward the importance of collaboration is cooling somewhat over time. Most vendors in the report sample already support core collaborative features, but their view of the importance of enterprise frameworks is on the decline,” continued Mr. Dresner. “Data story-telling is still in the early stages of support among industry vendors.”

Wisdom of Crowds® research is based on data collected on usage and deployment trends, products, and vendors. BI users in all roles and throughout all industries contributed to provide a complete view of realities, plans, and perceptions of the BI market.
