PALO ALTO, CA — (Marketwire) — 07/28/11 — VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced growing momentum for desktop virtualization with VMware View and VMware ThinApp® as educators look to provide students with better access to applications across devices, expand the boundaries of learning and put campuses on a more sustainable path for the future.
VMware View and VMware ThinApp are allowing schools to reduce the deployment time of PCs from eight hours to eight minutes and log on times by up to 90 percent on older machines. Not only is this allowing schools to streamline the time and resources required to manage desktop environments, but this is also allowing them to provide more students with better access to coursework, less downtime and a consistent learning experience across devices and locations. By leveraging thin and zero clients in conjunction with these solutions, education leaders are additionally delivering energy-efficient solutions that reduce their carbon footprint and cut costs.
conducted by the Center for Digital Education, found that colleges are putting multiple sustainability practices in place to decrease energy consumption. According to the survey, commissioned by VMware:
of responding colleges have instruments to measure energy efficiencies;
use e-waste recycling efforts and Earth-friendly disposal; and
of responding community colleges are pursuing transparency about their carbon footprint — a 16 percent increase since last year.
With ever increasing demand for better technology access from students, faculty and staff, the IT administrators at , in Mattoon, Illinois (3 hours south of Chicago) are investing in high-tech solutions that will reduce energy consumption as part of a campus-wide effort to be carbon neutral by 2016. With more than 1,000 seats of VMware View deployed across their 5 main locations and plans to roll out another 800, Lake Land has been able to streamline IT management, improve student access, and take advantage of zero clients to cut IT energy usage in half. This has saved the college more than $80,000 a year in electricity costs across 1,400 users.
When the College of Engineering & Computer Science at set out to plan its brand new building, a primary goal was to create a building that would be a model for environmentally friendly design and engineering. VMware desktop virtualization solutions provide access to large amounts of computing power available via the schools datacenter, while the university has saved a significant amount of power with VMware View by turning to thin clients — just 15 watts for a thin client vs. 150 watts for a traditional desktop PC. In addition, by deploying VMware ThinApp in a VMware View virtualized environment, the university can quickly provide students, researchers and developers the engineering applications that they need — including , video game development and other visually intensive applications.
By virtualizing its desktops using VMware View and thin clients, has been able to update hardware and software district-wide to ensure better access to applications and a consistent learning experience across all of its students. The district is now building out one of the first “green” IT campuses in Pennsylvania with two thin client computer labs running VMware View desktops hosted from the High School nine miles away.
“Desktop virtualization allows us to better support our satellite locations, without the need to lose time by driving an hour each way — saving us time and insulating us from the rising cost of gas. Roughly one-third of campus energy consumption is from technology, so any savings can make a huge impact in our electrical usage and IT budget. Moving to thin clients to deliver VMware View virtual desktops reduced electricity costs and doubled the lifespan of desktop PCs. Add the fact that we can also cut air-conditioning costs in labs and classrooms and that adds up to real savings.”
“We chose VMware to provide the desktop infrastructure that serves the day-to-day needs of students and faculty. It was also important that the solution from VMware be able to meet the more demanding research usage of some of our departments, while delivering significant energy savings and improved efficiency. By choosing to go with VMware we have reduced energy usage at the desktop by more than 90 percent.”
“The move to virtualization was driven by the need to meet limited budget resources, while still meeting technological and educational needs for students and faculty. Not only did we see a cost savings to the technology budget after deploying VMware View, we also saw a reduction in energy use. A typical desktop uses 100 to 150 watts of power, while a thin client uses a tenth of that amount. Virtualized desktops are the best option for sustainability and manageability.”
More than ever, enterprises and public organizations are dealing with two fundamental client computing pain points — providing secure access to an increasingly mobile workforce; and managing the burgeoning diversity of data, applications and devices needed to run their business. These challenges result from the transformative nature of cloud computing and the coming post-PC era.
In this environment, a new way to work will be required. The growing VMware End-User Computing portfolio seeks to free people and IT organizations from more than two decades of complex, device-centric computing and deliver a more user-centric, consumer cloud experience for the enterprise. This approach to personal computing will enable organizations to leverage public cloud resources while extending existing security models and providing access to applications and data from any device, where and when people needs it.
Establishing a new end-user computing model is a fundamental component of the VMware vision for IT as a Service — the transformation of IT to a more business-centric approach, focusing on outcomes such as operational efficiency, self service, competitiveness and rapid response. This means IT will shift from producing IT services to optimizing production and consumption of those services in ways consistent with business requirements. This will change the role of IT from a cost center to a center of strategic value.
