SANTA CLARA, CA — (Marketwired) — 04/14/15 — CloudVelox today announced that MyPoints.com, Inc., a subsidiary of United Online, Inc. (NASDAQ: UNTD), deployed its One Hybrid Cloud software to leverage Amazon Web Services (AWS) for its cloud disaster recovery (cloud DR). MyPoints had been provisioning and managing two separate data centers. With One Hybrid Cloud the company was able to improve Service Level Agreement (“SLA”) response times and reduce the total cost of operations (“TCO”) for disaster recovery by 50 percent. Since the fall of 2014, MyPoints was also able to perform more frequent testing of their secondary environment.
CloudVelox software automated key disaster recovery processes for MyPoints, including discovery, blueprinting, provisioning and deployment of the DR environment into AWS. The deployment was remarkably fast. Within a few weeks MyPoints had the option of shuttering its secondary data center.
Several dry runs were conducted during a proof of concept (PoC) trial, which gave the team adequate time to build trust in the new environment. The PoC involved the deployment of CloudVelox One Hybrid Cloud software on a staging pod with dozens of systems. The MyPoints team then tested the environment, igniting it into production on AWS with the push of a button.
Before CloudVelox, MyPoints had deployed a traditional disaster recovery (DR) model utilizing two data centers with duplicate infrastructure. The rapid growth of data was quickly making the OPEX and CAPEX costs associated with housing, cooling and managing the secondary data center and duplicate infrastructure, expensive. The new automated process allowed the company to reduce the time spent managing systems and the risk of data loss, which allowed the IT team to focus more on their core business.
The successful POC resulted in CloudVelox–s One Hybrid Cloud software being deployed in the production environment. This allowed MyPoints to decommission the dedicated collocation facility reducing SLAs for internal customers from 48 hours to 24 hours. In addition, there was a 50 percent reduction in total costs as the facility was replaced by CloudVelox on AWS. The MyPoints operating environment in the data center is now continuously synchronized into AWS, including replicating databases in real-time. A DR test run on AWS can be invoked anytime.
“The CloudVelox platform running on AWS helped our team to establish higher levels of service, resilience and accountability,” said Ananth Reddy, senior vice president of MyPoints. “We reduced DR expenses, increased protection and enhanced our ability to test our environment at will. That was a big leap from the world of maintaining a secondary facility.”
“Working with Ananth and his team was a rewarding experience,” said Rajeev Chawla, chief executive officer of CloudVelox. “It is always a pleasure to work with IT teams dedicated to delivering high impact innovation.”
More details about the MyPoints case study will be offered in an upcoming Gartner Cloud DR webinar entitled: . The webinar will include MyPoints CTO/SVP Ananth Reddy as well as speakers from Gartner, AWS and CloudVelox. It will premiere on April 17, 2015 at 11AM Pacific.
