Bishop O–Dowd High School Supports Increasing Number of Wireless Devices With Meru Education Grade Wi-Fi

SUNNYVALE, CA — (Marketwired) — 03/10/15 — ® (NASDAQ: MERU), a leader in intelligent Wi-Fi networking, today announced that Bishop O–Dowd High School, a private Catholic college preparatory school, has deployed a Meru wireless network to address the growing number of wireless devices on campus. Meru Wi-Fi will support approximately 1,200 students and 125 staff — many of whom use multiple mobile devices — across eight buildings located on seven-and-a-half acres. The school has begun a migration to Meru–s 802.11ac solution.

“The usage of wireless devices continues to grow at a rapid rate, putting more and more pressure on our infrastructure,” said Romeo Baldeviso, chief information officer at Bishop O–Dowd. “Meru–s wireless network provides us with the bandwidth and reliability needed to best serve our students and faculty members. The Bishop O–Dowd community embraces the integration of technology into the curriculum as a fundamental strategy for preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of their unique generation. “

Bishop O–Dowd is regarded as one of the most prestigious private schools in Northern California. Offering a bring your own device (BYOD) program to ensure students develop the expertise to utilize technology effectively, Bishop O–Dowd prides itself on providing students with the proper resources and technology to further their education.

The school, which previously relied on Cisco Wi-Fi, selected Meru Wi-Fi after facing challenges with 802.11b devices and balancing channels in a dense environment. Drop-offs and unreliable signals with access points across campus ultimately led Bishop O–Dowd to lean on Meru and its architecture with Virtual Cell technology to effectively address these issues.

“We want students and faculty to use the tools that are going to make them the most productive, but that requires establishing a wireless system that meets bandwidth and connectivity demands; Meru makes this a possibility,” said Baldeviso.

Bishop O–Dowd is now able to support any device that a student brings to campus, and is leveraging the Meru wireless network for education, athletics and for the school–s Wi-Fi cameras.

Meru–s Education-grade (MEG) wireless solution is designed to solve educational institutions– 1:1 computing and BYOD (Bring your own device) issues and support their learning-essential applications. MEG starts with three simple steps:

1. On-board quickly with 1:1 and BYOD provisioning and secure wireless access mapped to IT policies.
2. Connect all 1:1 and BYOD devices reliably anywhere on campus.
3. Learn by deploying validated learning and teaching applications on 1:1 and BYOD devices over the MEG wireless solution.

“Students, parents and faculty demand quality, and we are positioned to provide wireless networks that enable students to further their education and career growth,” said Sarosh Vesuna, vice president and general manager of Meru–s Enterprise Networking Business. “Meru Wi-Fi is designed to work consistently campus-wide, ensuring that users have the flexibility to connect with their wireless device of choice from anywhere on campus without worrying that the network will cut out.”
