MINNEAPOLIS, MN — (Marketwired) — 12/22/14 — , the nation–s largest telemedicine company and radiology practice with over 500 physicians, today announced that its integrated imaging network has processed more than 1 billion images so far in 2014, up more than 200 million images (20%+) from 2013. vRad–s telemedicine platform is used 24/7/365 by its thousands of radiology-group, hospital and health-system client facilities to send and receive images used to review studies and provide high-quality diagnostic reports within appropriate timeframes.
Depending on the type of study ordered, there can be just a single image, or thousands of images (often found in complex/emergent CT studies which can be upwards of 100 MB or more depending on the scan). Additional clinical documentation (e.g., prior images and reports and/or patient history) also increases the study size, but provides vRad–s radiologists with the most complete patient history available, which ultimately allows them to provide a better, higher quality interpretation. vRad averages roughly 50 MB per study and its telemedicine platform will consume 400 TB (terabytes) of new storage by the end of 2014. (The entire printed collection of the U.S. Library of Congress is 10 TB; over 2,500 feature length films can be stored on a 400 TB hard drive.)
“Our teleradiology network and patented workflow create what is essentially the largest PACS instance worldwide, built to handle massive data volumes at great speed with unprecedented reliability,” said Shannon Werb, Chief Information Officer for vRad. “Technical innovation, operational efficiency, quality assurance programs and clinical expertise ensure our ability to transform over a billion radiology images to quality interpretations by getting the right images to the right subspecialist who then can focus on one report and one patient at a time.”
