HAYWARD, CA — (Marketwired) — 10/30/14 — Davis Instruments has been selected to provide the weather instrumentation for The Discovery Channel–s upcoming “Skyscraper Live with Nik Wallenda” event and broadcast. Legendary daredevil and wire walker Nik Wallenda will be wire walking from the rooftops of three skyscrapers, including one segment over the Chicago River, on Sunday, November 2nd.
This is the third time Davis Instruments has provided weather stations for the Wallenda team. They were also onsite for Wallenda–s successful Niagara Falls and Grand Canyon crossings.
For the Windy City event, Wallenda will start atop the Marina City west tower and travel more than two city blocks to the Leo Burnett building, 50 stories above the frigid waters of the Chicago River. For the next segment, he will cross between the Marina City towers.
Davis Instruments and The Discovery Channel production team will set up an on-site weather network that can be viewed at WeatherLink.com. The weather network will consist of five Davis Vantage Pro2 wireless weather stations. One will be setup on each of the three buildings, with a fourth station hung mid-wire over the Chicago River. A fifth will sit at ground level, 50 stories below the structures. The Davis Instruments crew will feed the weather conditions — generated every 2.5 seconds — to The Discovery Channel production team for live broadcast throughout the event.
The Davis Team will also work directly with The Weather Channel anchor Jim Cantore to provide real-time weather readings throughout the event. “Much like the Grand Canyon [walk], it is important for us to monitor the changing wind conditions, gusts and updrafts along with the changing wind direction over the Chicago River during Nik–s walk,” said Cantore. “At the Grand Canyon, we monitored updrafts and wind gusts reaching 50 MPH. It is important to understand the dynamics of the changing conditions as Nik makes his historic walks.”
Viewers also can monitor up-to-the-minute weather conditions at during the three-hour live event, to be televised internationally the evening of Sunday, November 2nd.
