NEWTON, MA — (Marketwired) — 09/24/14 — , the market leader in local content delivery solutions, has released data that shows 96 percent of iOS 8 requests through PeerApp customers were served from the cache, allowing subscribers to download the update much more quickly.
PeerApp measured apple.com traffic of a sample of customers over the period of September 15th – 21st, and found traffic peaked after the iOS 8 release to over 4 Terabytes per hour — a rate four times higher than normal traffic peaks of 1 Terabyte per hour.
With the release of iOS 8 on September 17th, millions of people around the world attempted to download the software at the same time, resulting in severe network congestion in many areas. Many iPhone and iPad users experienced long waits and failures while trying to download the iOS 8 software update.
Fortunately, mobile, cable and telco operators that use PeerApp–s UltraBand solution were able to handle the surge with nearly all of the iOS 8 requests cached and served locally, virtually eliminating the traffic spikes within their networks and alleviating bottlenecks to accelerate user downloads. In fact, with PeerApp caching, users downloaded the software update 8-12x faster than average.
“The iOS 8 update is just one example — though a very visible example — of the dynamic nature of today–s Internet and the challenges it places on operators of all types. Large activities like this — whether known in advance or unpredictable –viral– events — create congestion in operators– networks, leading to dissatisfied customers, and higher service call/text/tweet volumes, which must be managed,” explained Alan Arolovitch, PeerApp CTO. “We are pleased to help our customers avoid that congestion and meet their customers– expectations.”
PeerApp enables cable, mobile, and telco operators to embrace the exploding demand for Internet video, software, games, and information. PeerApp–s award-winning open and multiservice caching infrastructure enables operators to deliver Internet content with a high quality of experience by bringing the most frequently requested content closer to the subscriber. The market leader in transparent caching, PeerApp solutions are commercially deployed by over 450 network operators and enterprises in over 100 countries, and are managing over 3 Terabits of capacity. PeerApp is headquartered in Newton, Massachusetts, USA. For more information, visit and follow @peerapp on Twitter.
