Network virtual overlays (NVOs) have been instrumental in solving problems around scaling and isolation for heavily virtualized environments. The benefits of NVOs, however, do not stop there. Today, we can take advantage of having intelligence at the edge, close to the application. NVOs can provide higher layer networking services verse just simple L2 network isolation, which can ultimately provide single virtual hops for networking services. This reduces the load on physical networks, and increases performance by reducing physical hops around the network.
