SANTA BARBARA, CA — (Marketwired) — 11/14/13 — , the leading provider of private and hybrid cloud computing software, today was awarded the Netflix Cloud Prize for the best Portability Enhancement. Netflix Cloud Architect Adrian Cockcroft presented the Cloud Prize winners with a coveted “Cloud Monkey” trophy on Thursday at the conference in Las Vegas.
“With the introduction of its OSS tools, Netflix has set a new standard for how companies can contribute to the overall advancement of cloud computing,” said Chris Grzegorczyk, Chief Architect and Co-Founder of Eucalyptus. “Eucalyptus was the first private cloud platform to support NetflixOSS tools, including Chaos Monkey, Asgard and Edda. This award recognizes Eucalyptus- API fidelity with AWS and the importance we place on providing customers with open cloud solutions.”
All winners were evaluated by an expert panel of judges including Amazon Chief Technology Officer Werner Vogels, Telx Senior Vice President and author of Cloudonomics Joe Weinman and Netflix Cloud Vice President Yury Izrailevsky. The entrants were from around the world, with a mixture of individuals and teams from small and large companies. Eucalyptus was named winner in the Portability Enhancement category for enabling NetflixOSS services to run unchanged in a private datacenter and for contributing changes to the Asgard console so that developers can pick any AWS region or a Eucalyptus based datacenter from the same drop down menu. Additionally, Eucalyptus was honored for exemplifying consistent support and promotion to help grow the NetflixOSS ecosystem.
According to Cockcroft, “Eucalyptus has been using NetflixOSS to provide a proof point for portability of applications from AWS to private clouds based on Eucalyptus. In June 2013 they shipped a major update that included advanced AWS features such as Autoscale Groups that NetflixOSS depends on. To support the extra capabilities of Eucalyptus and the ability to deploy applications to AWS regions and Eucalyptus datacenters from the same Asgard console… they made a series of changes to NetflixOSS projects which they submitted as a prize entry. They have demonstrated working code at several Netflix meetups.”
As a grand prize winner, Eucalyptus was awarded with a cash prize of $10,000 and $5,000 in AWS promotional credits.
