Texas Medical Center and Ayasdi to Create a World-Class Center for Complex Data Research and Innovation

PALO ALTO, CA — (Marketwired) — 11/13/13 — Ayasdi () announced that the (TMC), one of the largest medical centers in the world with more than 50 medicine-related institutions and over seven million annual patient visits, has selected Ayasdi as part of to revolutionize patient care, translational medicine, and clinical research. As part of the announcement, the Ayasdi platform will be made available to all member organizations including , , , , and , equipping TMC to solve the most complex challenges in healthcare and life sciences.

From the office of the White House to every pharmaceutical and healthcare organization in the world, data is the key strategic asset that has the potential to change the way that we provide patient care, cure diseases, and save lives. estimates that, “If US healthcare were able to use big data creatively and effectively to drive efficiency and quality, more than $300 billion in value would be created every year.”

Today, the healthcare industry amassed over and this number is expected to reach 25,000 petabytes by the year 2020. Although we have figured out how to store, manage and process data, the ability to derive knowledge from that data has not changed much in the last 30 years. In most cases, organizations rely on labor-intensive, hypothesis-based analytical approaches limited to only people with both advanced degrees in genetics or biology and experience in computational mathematics and statistics. The compounding result — with exponential data growth estimates and increased data complexity, finding breakthroughs and innovations from healthcare data will be less likely unless new data analysis techniques are applied.

The Texas Medical Center endeavors to create a world-class center for complex data research and operational excellence in medicine and research. Integral to achieving that vision, TMC has committed to break down the barriers to institutional data sharing, and facilitate the creation of data infrastructure, services, and technology for the analysis of complex and heterogeneous data sources. As part of this strategy, deriving knowledge from data using a machine-automated, fact-based approach will be critical to allowing TMC and its member organization to utilize all of its data to solve important problems.

“TMC is entering a new era in our evolution where member institutions are exchanging ideas and sharing insights and resources to accelerate discovery to advance care. Specifically, we-re focused on five areas — health policy, stem-cell research, clinical trials, genomics, and innovation — and data is the key to revolutionizing all of them,” said Dr. Robert C. Robbins, President and Chief Executive Officer of TMC.

“Ayasdi offers an innovative technology that demonstrates new relationships in data that might otherwise go unnoticed. It further enhances our ability to convert complex medical data into actionable knowledge,” said Dr. Paul Klotman, President and Chief Executive Officer at Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Ron DePinho, President and Chief Executive Officer at MD Anderson Cancer Center added, “This partnership is yet another example of how we intend to leverage the tremendous assets of TMC to accelerate discovery and transform these discoveries into advancing care to patients.”

There are three primary ways that TMC will utilize Ayasdi-s Topological Data Analysis (TDA) technology:

Allow for collaboration and analysis of clinical and genomic data for clinical capture and sub-population stratification for Autism, TBI, PTSD, Leukemia, and cancer.

Allow for collaboration and analysis of EMR data to stratify treatment and clinical outcomes for care path optimization.

Combine public data sets with TMC data for member institutions to discover important biomarkers and opportunities to repurpose drugs in new ways.

“We-re honored to work with a world-class organization like TMC to target some of the most challenging diseases and conditions and to accelerate breakthroughs in healthcare and life sciences,” said Gurjeet Singh, Co-Founder and CEO at Ayasdi. “We are excited to enable TMC with a new approach to discover knowledge about leukemia, heart disease, traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, and many more.”

Considered one of the largest medical centers in the world, TMC is dedicated to the highest standards of patient care, research, and education. Either not-for-profit or governmental, member institutions include 21 renowned hospitals with seven acute care, six pediatric care, and eight specialty care facilities; three public health organizations; two universities; three medical schools; six nursing programs; two pharmacy schools; a dental school; eight academic and research institutions; and 13 support organizations. First Lady Barbara Bush recognized TMC as “Houston-s Gift to the World.” For more information, visit or on .

Ayasdi is transforming how the world uses data to solve complex problems. Founded in 2008 after a decade of research at Stanford, DARPA, and NSF, Ayasdi is pioneering a new approach for enterprises to automatically discover and operationalize insights from their data. Ayasdi-s Insight Discovery platform uses Topological Data Analysis (TDA) combined with an ensemble of machine learning techniques to enable data scientists, domain experts, and business people to achieve value from their data without the need to write code, queries, or ask questions. Funded by Khosla Ventures, Institutional Venture Partners, GE Ventures, Citi Ventures, and FLOODGATE, Ayasdi-s customers include General Electric, Citigroup, Merck, Anadarko, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), and Mount Sinai Hospital.
