REDWOOD SHORES, CA — (Marketwired) — 10/28/13 — Oracle (NYSE: ORCL)
Oracle today announced that Telefónica I+D, the research and development company of the Telefónica Group, and Oracle have completed a process of definition, developing and testing to allow to extend mobile policy management to fixed broadband networks.
This will allow the use of Policy Server and Oracle-s Tekelec , or subscriber database, in a fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) environment. This successful trial is further evidence of Telefónica-s commitment to build a leading, ubiquitous smart network and enable subscribers to tailor their network experience across devices and accesses.
The test was developed in Telefónica I+D-s properties, where some business case scenarios were prepared in order to verify the FMC capabilities of the Oracle solution. This successful work has produced a solution that sets out the key next-generation policy management requirements and handles a more diverse set of subscriber-centric rules.
Policy Server supports variations of RADIUS, the predominant control protocol used by service providers to offer quality of service (QoS) controls as well as quota management for fixed broadband data services. Multiple network elements communicate over RADIUS, and vendors often apply extensions to the protocol on their equipment using the Vendor Specific Attribute (VSA) defined by the standard. Policy Server supports VSA variations of RADIUS implementations to help ensure smooth delivery of subscribers- desired services, especially in multi-vendor Broadband Remote Access Server (B-RAS) environments.
This functionality allows Policy Server to support the variations corresponding to the Access Node Control Protocol (ANCP). ANCP provides data about the physical parameters of an xDSL connection such as current (synchronized) rate, maximum data rate and the subscriber-s contractual data allowances. Having this data for each subscriber on xDSL access helps enable smoother services, especially those with minimum upstream or downstream bandwidth requirements. In addition, it helps service providers avoid offering services to subscribers whose lines- physical parameters cannot comply with the requirements of the given service.
The testing demonstrated Policy Server-s ability to support both mobile and fixed operators in a single deployment. The company-s policy products support fixed and mobile service providers in North America, Latin America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
“Service providers have a tremendous untapped potential to create and offer new innovative broadband data services that both increase revenues and increase customer loyalty,” said Albert Fernandez, Senior Director, Europe Sales, Oracle Communications. “The first step is testing and implementing intelligent network technologies that give service providers a path to software-defined networks. We are excited to work with Telefónica I+D – Global CTO Unit as one of the great innovators in the field of networks.”
