Pica8 and Vello Systems Announce OpenFlow Networking Interoperability

MENLO PARK, CA and PALO ALTO, CA — (Marketwired) — 09/05/13 — Pica8 Inc., the leader in open networking for software defined networks (SDN), and Vello Systems, a leading provider of open, converged networking and software solutions and charter member of the Open Networking Foundation, today announced OpenFlow-based interoperability between Pica8-s open switching operating system running on a 48×10 GbE open switch with 40 GbE capability and the VellOSĀ® 7.0 operating system.

The interoperability testing successfully demonstrates an example of Vello Systems- ability to expand its ecosystem and lead the way to unify — using the standard OpenFlow protocol — the optical, Ethernet and virtual forwarding planes under a common open software platform. As the first company to support OpenFlow 1.3 and have a Layer 2/Layer 3 presence, Pica8-s relationship with Vello Systems will provide customers with more choices to leverage SDN technology.

The interoperability testing recognizes the rapid growth of deployable use cases in Data Center and Metro networks, built on the principles of Open Networking and SDN. The supported solutions include Continuous Availability across data centers and enterprise data center applications. It also adds to each company-s portfolio of OpenFlow compatible switches and operating systems.

The networking infrastructure industry is embracing the OpenFlow movement to separate the “control plane” from physical network equipment, and incorporate it into fully standards-based application provisioning interfaces that can run on any platform of a customer-s choosing. Pica8 and Vello Systems are among the leaders in providing interoperable solutions, with the goal of providing data center operators and network service providers greater assurance that equipment can talk to each other from “day one” of installation and activation.

VellOSĀ® 7.0 operating system unifies the control of the optical, Ethernet and virtual networking planes under common open software and features a level of automation not found in competing offerings and traditional solutions. Based on a distributed Linux framework, VellOS 7.0 incorporates standards-based RESTful application provisioning interfaces (APIs) and network policy and control implemented via a GUI to let customers mix and match any combination of OpenFlow-enabled network equipment regardless of the forwarding technology. As a result, only VellOS offers dependable end-to-end visibility — for management and analytics — of all network resources (and at all network link speeds).

Pica8-s operating system runs across its line of purpose-built open switches ideal for cloud or virtualized data centers that require flexibility and adaptability. Pica8 technology seamlessly integrates with today-s data center applications on traditional network architectures, while enabling the exploration of new SDN technologies, such as OpenFlow.

“Part of the appeal of OpenFlow is the ability for end users to mix and match equipment to create the lowest cost and highest operational efficiency scenario,” said Karl May, Chief Executive Officer, Vello Systems. “However, these IT managers and network operators need to know that this equipment will work seamlessly from the beginning. This achievement then represents a valuable step forward for our customers and the OpenFlow movement as a whole.”

“We are pleased to announce this joint demonstration of interoperability as it represents a consistent advancement of deployment-ready OpenFlow switches running robust applications,” said James Liao, Pica8 CEO and Co-Founder. “Leveraging OpenFlow will facilitate administrative central control while maintaining distributed intelligence to enable local switches to have the decision-making ability needed to suit the particular application and deliver very high service levels.”

Since 2009, Pica8 has been transforming the data center by providing the world-s first open switching system, which can be personalized to fit any application environment. A pioneer in the software-defined networking (SDN) revolution, Pica8-s PicOS, its externally programmable switching operating system runs on commodity, bare-metal switches made by ODM partners to provide the ultimate in cost savings. In a single package, costs are slashed, and customization for the data center becomes a promise fulfilled. Pica8 is a global company headquartered in Palo Alto, California.
