PeerApp Announces Content Service Extension Initiative to Foster Open Collaboration Within Content Delivery Ecosystem

NEWTON, MA — (Marketwired) — 05/20/13 — , the market leader in operator caching platforms for faster and higher-quality Internet content delivery, today announced the formation of the (CSE) initiative in cooperation with global CDN service providers EdgeCast Networks and Limelight Networks, Inc. (Limelight). The Content Service Extension initiative offers a service framework that will allow third party CDNs and Internet content services to extend their footprint deep into operator networks by leveraging operator infrastructure already in place. The goal of the initiative is to promote cooperation among network operators and Internet content ecosystem participants based on open interfaces and interoperability. It is open to broad participation by global CDN providers, network operators, content service providers and technology vendors.

The explosive growth of Internet traffic and rising consumer quality expectations for content services has put a strain on every participant in the end-to-end delivery ecosystem. Network operators are seeking new ways to monetize their ongoing investments in capacity and the functional capabilities of their networks, and CDNs and over-the-top (OTT) content service providers are looking for cost-effective ways to expand their footprint to support growing demands for quality and to serve global markets.

Content Service Extension provides a way to virtually extend CDNs and Internet content services deep into operator networks, using a common, multi-tenant infrastructure. It allows network operators, CDNs and OTT service providers to enter into business arrangements that benefit all participants, while leveraging the existing terabit-scale global operator cache deployment footprint. Through an open network API, operators can offer CDNs access to cache control, QoS, resource management, reporting and other value-added capabilities. The Content Service Extension architecture offers operators a scalable and open alternative to “black box” private caches that are dedicated to and controlled by a single OTT service provider.

“CSE helps us further expand the reach and capacity of our network, which carries a significant portion of the world-s Internet traffic,” said Ted Middleton, vice president of product management at EdgeCast Networks. “CSE aligns well with our core mission of providing value, performance, and control to network operators and content publishers, so it has been a natural point of collaboration between EdgeCast and PeerApp.”

“CSE promises to extend the reach of the Limelight Orchestrate Digital Presence Platform deep into operator networks. This initiative is aligned with Limelight-s mission of enabling customers to better engage digital audiences,” said Peter Coppola, vice president of market development, Limelight Networks. “We value the power of open, inclusionary initiatives such as CSE in helping expand our market leading global footprint.”

“With this initiative we are allowing operators to participate in OTT value chain in a way that is aligned with existing business models and market participants,” said Alan Arolovitch, CTO at PeerApp. “Content Service Extension converts existing operator assets into programmable content delivery infrastructure that can be used by operators for both internal and external services. It represents an immediate and practical network functions virtualization (NFV) and software defined network (SDN) solution. We are actively engaged in the NFV working group within the ETSI standards body to promote the initiative and related use cases.”

Market trials for CSE-based products and services are scheduled to take place in the second half of 2013.

PeerApp will be discussing this topic at the “” panel at the on May 20 in New York City.

enables network operators to efficiently meet the exploding consumer demand for over-the-top (OTT) video, multimedia and data content. PeerApp-s award-winning UltraBand multiservice transparent caching platform enhances subscribers- quality of experience (QoE), improves network efficiency, and optimizes content delivery networks. It does this by intelligently caching and efficiently delivering the most frequently requested managed and unmanaged video, audio, file-sharing, software updates, and peer-to-peer traffic — all from the network edge.
