LOS ANGELES, CA — (Marketwired) — 05/01/13 — Underwriters CEO Robert H. Lorsch and President Kira Reed Lorsch today announced a “” campaign directed to the military and their families through Military Times. Dr. Shakil Afridi is the man who risked his life to verify the location of Osama bin Laden for the United States. The campaign calls for enlisted military and their families to participate in a poll that asks, Military Times readers are directed to the poll at where they can cast their vote.
Considered by many as an American Hero, Dr. Afridi-s reward for helping locate bin Laden has been to be captured, tortured and sentenced to 33 years in a remote Pakistani prison. The campaign calls attention to Dr. Afridi and Secretary of State John Kerry-s comments on his plight and the moral dilemma that has left Dr. Afridi behind. Ads in the campaign also ask what would happen if you or a member of your family were captured, tortured or left behind, what would you want America to do?
The campaign starts today with banner ads in , , , and , linking to the poll at . On May 13th, a magazine-size, full page ad will appear in all editions of Military Times. The May 13th issues, which are delivered worldwide starting May 6th, will be sent to 245,000 Active Duty, retired, enlisted and veteran subscribers and seen by an estimated 637,000 readers. The results of the poll will be sent to Congress, the State Department and the White House. Additional information about the Free Afridi campaign and a copy of the Military Times ad is also available at .
According to Bob Lorsch, “April 25th was the first day of what has become a two-day appeal hearing for Dr. Afridi. The next day of the hearing takes place tomorrow, May 2nd. The fate of Dr. Afridi and his release could be decided at that time. Therefore, it is important that the government of Pakistan understand why Americans are concerned about this issue and that Dr. Afridi should go free on behalf of all people in the world terrorized by bin Laden.”
According to Kira Reed Lorsch, “This Free Afridi campaign is designed to appeal to the men and women who are in harm-s way protecting our nation throughout the world and could someday find themselves confronted with a similar dilemma, to decide if or when someone gets left behind. If we do not help free Dr. Afridi, who will be there to assist America next time we ask them to?” Coincidently, the poll is launching today on May 1st, just one day prior to the second anniversary of the end of bin Laden-s reign of terror.
U.S. Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) has provided information to FreeAfridi.com that explains what concerned Americans can do to rally Congress, the State Department and the White House to help get Dr. Afridi released. Rep. Rohrabacher also introduced a Resolution, H.Res. 86, on February 27, 2013, calling Dr. Afridi “a hero to whom the people of the United States owe a debt of gratitude” and expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that he should be immediately released. The Resolution is being co-sponsored by 17 U.S. Congress members including Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Jim Gerlach (R-PA), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Brian Higgins (D-NY), Duncan Hunter (R-CA), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Ted Poe (R-TX), Matt Salmon (R-AZ), Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), Brad Sherman (D-CA) and Steve Stockman (R-TX), the original co-sponsors, and Reps. Jessica Chastain and Jason Clarke, two of the film-s stars, did in fact call for Afridi-s freedom on the red carpet.
Since then, Bob and Kira Lorsch have set up where concerned citizens can learn more about Dr. Afridi. Go to to see the ad in Military Times, download information, send messages to Congress, follow media coverage, request Free Afridi ribbons, and access our social media tools.
