ASC X12 Announces Latest Release of CARC/RARC Usage TR2

FALLS CHURCH, VA — (Marketwired) — 04/23/13 — Accredited Standards Committee X12 () announced today that it has released a Type 2 Technical Report (TR2) identifying usage standards for the Claim Adjustment Reason Codes (CARC) and Remittance Advice Remark Codes (RARC) that are conveyed initially in the ASC X12 Health Care Claim Payment/Advice (835) and then conveyed to secondary or other subsequent payers in the ASC X12 Health Care Claim (837). The most current version of this official ASC X12 work product is available at .

“This work product has been created as a guide for health care organizations using CARC and RARC as part of claims and remittance processing. The TR2 is an encyclopedia of CARC and RARC usages. The intent is to convey a complete and accurate message using the most appropriate codes to promote accurate automated processing in support of administrative simplification,” said Margaret Weiker, ASC X12-s Insurance Subcommittee Chair.

ASC X12-s federally mandated 005010 TR3s, including the transactions that reference CARC and RARC, were originally adopted in 2006. The CARC and RARC code set committees update the respective code sets multiple times a year. ASC X12-s CARC and RARC Usage TR2 is also revised regularly to reflect the code set revisions and other changes requested by implementers. The CARC and RARC Usage TR2 is an important tool for standardizing code set use across the industry.

Recognizing the value of the ASC X12 CARC and RARC Usage TR2, the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions (IAIABC) adopted it as part of its Model Rule Template, which provides jurisdictional guidance regarding national workers- compensation electronic messaging. Following that guidance, several states have subsequently adopted this ASC X12 TR2 in their respective electronic medical billing (eBill) regulations.

ASC X12, chartered by the American National Standards Institute more than 30 years ago, develops and maintains EDI and CICA standards along with XML schemas which drive business processes globally. The diverse membership of ASC X12 includes technologists and business process experts, encompassing health care, insurance, transportation, finance, government, supply chain and other industries.
