WAPAKONETA, OH and PETALUMA, CA — (Marketwired) — 04/23/13 — (Independents), a wholly owned subsidiary of (CNI), a world-class wholesale provider of operations support solutions to video, Internet and VoIP service providers, and , a leader in software-defined networks (SDNs) for service providers and data center operators, announced today the successful demonstration of 100G services over Ohio-s GigE Plus Fiber Optic Network. The demonstration, which employed test equipment provided by , delivered both 100G wavelengths and 100 Gigabit Ethernet connections over the network. With exploding bandwidth demand resulting from cloud-based applications and storage, as well as streaming video, 100G services are expected to become commonplace for wholesale, data center interconnect, and large business applications.
According to CNI-s Chief Technology Officer Randy Plaisier, “This is an important milestone for service providers in Northwest Ohio. It validates the feasibility of 100G services, both from a cost and functionality standpoint. As we continue to experience an explosion in bandwidth demand for cloud services, streaming media and mobile devices, 100G services will become increasingly vital.”
Independents will offer 100G services over the Fiber Optic Network. GigE Plus allows Independents Fiber Network and other providers in Northwest Ohio to offer a variety of standards-compliant, high-speed Ethernet services to their business and governmental customers.
Chris Warhurst, Cyan Vice President of Systems Engineering, stated, “Independents has once again shown it is on the leading edge of practically deployable technology. In addition to wholesale services for its carrier customers, Independents and other carriers participating in CNI-s GigE Plus Availability Coalition (GigE-PAC) will be able to offer 100 Gigabit Ethernet services to large businesses and 100G wavelength services to cloud data centers.”
The 100G demonstration, covering 500 total route miles and seven cities in Ohio, resulted in end-to-end latency of only 4.2ms, as measured by the JDSU T-Bird MTS-8000 test equipment. JDSU Field Sales Engineer Curt Dukes also provided help in setting up and conducting the demonstration.
The demonstration employed Cyan-s new single-slot DTM-100G coherent transponder module. The DTM-100G, which is supported by the entire family of Cyan packet-optical transport platforms (P-OTPs), including the ultra-compact 2RU , supports the full range of optical reach capabilities. In addition to dramatically reducing the cost of delivering 100G transport services, the DTM-100G gives service providers unprecedented flexibility in their deployments. This flexibility is the result of integrated support for short, medium, long and extended reach C form-factor pluggable (CFP) client interfaces.
