First MEMS Oscillators for 32.768kHz

The Californian semiconductor manufacturer SiTime presented the SiT15xx series MEMS oscillators for frequencies from 1Hz to 32.768kHZ just a few days ago. These new products are highly advantageous as a replacement for conventional 32.768kHz oscillating crystals. Key features include high reliability and robustness, small dimensions and oscillation build-up reliability.

The kHz oscillators from SiTime are available in six versions with various combinations of operating voltage, frequency and housing type:

• SiT153x: Operation at 1.2V to 3.63V (buffered supply)
• SiT154x: Operation at 2.7V to 4.5V (uncontrolled Li-Ion battery)
• SiT15x2: Frequency 32.768kHz, housing 1.5×0.8 mm CSP
• SiT15x3: Frequency 32.768kHz, housing 2.0×1.2 mm SMD
• SiT15x4: Frequency 1Hz to 32.768kHz, housing CSP and SMD

The SiT15xx oscillators have a Nano-Drive output with a programmable coupling type (AC or DC), signal deviation (rail-to-rail, 250mV to 800mV) and signal level (for DC coupling). This permits optimum adaptation to the properties of the pulse input (X-IN) of the assembly being controlled (e.g. MCU or PMIC). With the signal deviation, the modulation-dependent power consumption can also be reduced. This results in very low overall power input from 750nA.

When an oscillating crystal is replaced with one of the new MEMS oscillators from SiTime, capacitors on the pulse connections (X-IN, X-OUT) can be eliminated. That saves space and improves reliability. A stability of 20ppm (25°C), 75ppm (-10°C to +70°C) and 100ppm (-40°C to +85°C) permits use as a time basis in many applications as well. The oscillator versions in the SMD-2012 housing have connections that are largely compatible with the conventional layouts of oscillating crystals with comparable dimensions.

Samples of the new SiT15xx MEMS oscillators for kHz frequencies can be ordered from SE Spezial-Electronic effective immediately for versions in the SMD-2012 housing, and starting in May for versions in the CSP-1508 housing.
