SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwired) — 04/02/13 — (NASDAQ: RVBD), the application performance company, today announced that users of Riverbed ® OPNET AppInternals Xpert® can now apply big data collection and analysis techniques to application performance management. Big data techniques offer application support, developer, and QA teams deep insight into the end-user experience, speeding problem diagnosis, increasing IT efficiency, and improving application service levels. OPNET AppInternals Xpert provides these capabilities through the combination of Transaction Trace Warehouse, a comprehensive record of all application transactions, and big data analytics.
“The full potential of application performance management lies in exploiting the information that resides in large volumes of detailed data about transaction performance and behavior,” said Alain Cohen, co-founder of OPNET Technologies, Inc. and chief technology officer, Riverbed Performance Management. “Our big data capabilities go far beyond traditional statistical performance summaries by enabling massive retention of transactional data and powerful unstructured search that gives IT the ability to quickly find and analyze the right set of transactions to definitively answer questions. Equipped with these capabilities, IT organizations can rapidly detect performance problems and pinpoint their root causes before users or the business are impacted.”
The scale, diversity, and granularity of data required to comprehensively manage application performance quickly overwhelms traditional performance management solutions. Redundant and virtualized infrastructure, load-balanced applications, and service-oriented architectures further contribute to the exploding volume of available performance data. Given the volume and speed of available data, analytics are essential to identify potential threats and service disruptions. Historically, performance management solutions have dealt with this volume of data by sampling, averaging, or otherwise reducing the granularity of data they collect. These techniques leave customers with inadequate data and insight, losing the ability to track the complete application performance picture for each user and every application.
In contrast, big data collection and analysis techniques gather all data, however large and varied, into a single framework for analysis. Application support teams, development teams, and IT managers gain the ability to search, analyze, and respond to the specific challenges of specific users or individual transactions rather than just managing performance averages. This level of insight is often completely hidden by traditional application performance management tools. The result is faster troubleshooting, increased uptime and the opportunity to proactively identify application issues before they impact business.
“Enterprise IT organizations are rapidly becoming overloaded with data, but in many cases still lack the complete visibility and insight they need to resolve issues quickly and communicate a view of what is really going on with application performance,” said Bojon Simic, president and principal analyst at TRAC Research. “By incorporating big data techniques into performance management, organizations can get to the root cause of problems faster and gain new views into patterns that can make their organization more efficient.”
OPNET AppInternals Xpert applies big data techniques to APM through its Transaction Trace Warehouse, which records all application transactions across all application tiers. With every transaction captured, application teams have the deep insights they need at hand. A simple, powerful open-ended search speeds troubleshooting by making it fast and easy to find a single problematic transaction among a billion good ones. In addition, OPNET AppInternals Xpert includes a correlation engine that automates troubleshooting by identifying cause-and-effect relationships across hundreds of thousands of performance metrics from across multiple application tiers.
“Transaction Trace Warehouse has proven to be the ideal tool to allow us to rapidly execute root cause analysis for enterprise application performance or operational issues,” said Keith O-Connell, delivery manager, Enterprise and Portal Solutions Group at Xtivia. “The level of detail that is captured and maintained is unparalleled in the APM space, and the ability to rapidly execute custom historical analysis of performance data transforms the identification of problem trends or recurring events into an almost trivial task.”
