EMEA Security Appliance Market Shows Strongest Results Yet in 4Q12, Says IDC

3.2013 – According to the latest EMEA Quarterly Security Appliance Tracker from International Data Corporation (IDC), 4Q12 factory revenue for the market reached $696.8 million, a 5.2% increase over the same quarter a year ago. Shipments increased 5.2% year on year, with 200,089 units shipped. For the full year 2012, security appliance market factory revenue was about $2.5 billion, a 2% increase over 2011.
EMEA Market Highlights
Cisco remained the top overall security appliance vendor, with 19.6% market revenue share for 4Q12 and 20.6% for the full 2012. Unified threat management remained the largest security appliance segment in 4Q12, and together with Web security appliances, the only one to show annual growth.
“As happened with the firewall market a few years ago, unified threat management appliances are now cannibalizing the dedicated IPS standalone appliance revenue, as unified solutions are proving more and more popular in organizations of all sizes,” said Romain Fouchereau, manager of IDC-s security appliances service.
Western European Market Highlights
The Western European market showed similar trends toward security appliances, with $522.9 million revenue in 4Q12, representing 3.9% growth over the same quarter in 2011. Total revenue generated in 2012 was almost $1.15 billion, with annual growth flat at 0.5%.
“A strong last quarter in Western Europe, mainly led by the UTM results, helped security appliance market growth to remain positive in 2012,” said Fouchereau. “Demand for unified solutions remains as strong as ever, as simplified deployment and lower TCO are major selling points for these security solutions.”
CEMA Market Highlights
The security appliance market in the Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa region showed a healthy 9.5% year-on-year growth in 4Q12, reaching $173.9 million in factory revenue. The fourth quarter brought total CEMA factory revenue to $593 million for the full year 2012, with growth of 7.2% compared with 2011.
“In 2012 many companies in CEMA continued to acquire appliances with essential security functions, such as firewall/VPN and IPS,” said Oleg Sidorkin, senior research analyst at IDC. “At the same time, end users valued appliance scalability and the possibility to add more security functions to the same appliance in the future.”
IDC-s EMEA Quarterly Security Appliance Tracker offers the ability to quickly and effectively respond to today-s dynamic security server appliance market by keeping pace with evolving functionality and the rapid deployment of new models competing in the marketplace.
