AUSTIN, TX — (Marketwire) — 11/26/12 — Active Power (NASDAQ: ACPW), manufacturer of UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems and modular infrastructure solutions, announced ARM, a United Kingdom based semiconductor and software design firm, has deployed and is operating one of its PowerHouse modules at ARM-s EUHPC (high performance compute) data center in Cambridge, England. served as the turnkey design and build provider and Active Power-s customer on the project.
To meet ARM-s limited available build space and aggressive deployment schedule, Active Power delivered all critical power equipment in two purpose built enclosures via its PowerHouse platform. The first container combines Active Power-s high efficiency system, switchgear, and monitoring and controls software. The second enclosure consists of two redundant standby diesel engines each rated at 2 MVA and Active Power-s proprietary GenSTART generator starting modules.
With its leading energy and space efficiencies, low capital and operating expenses, and rapid deployment capability, the complete containerized infrastructure solution enabled ARM to optimize their data center for availability, efficiency, and sustainability and achieve its most forward thinking design.
This innovative design was most recently recognized as Data Center Project of the Year at the 2012 UK IT Industry Awards on Nov. 14, 2012. Hosted by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, and Computing, the award acknowledged the data center as the most outstanding IT project over the last year. The annual award is presented to organizations who have achieved exceptional results through outstanding project implementation.
“Active Power-s PowerHouse solution enabled ARM to meet its technical and schedule requirements and be incredibly innovative in how it designed and built this data center,” said Gordon Smith, Director, Design and Build, for 2bm. “This unconventional approach to power infrastructure design helped ARM, in part, achieve the industry acknowledgement it has received to date.”
“This is a significant achievement for ARM-s award-winning EUHPC data center and we-re excited to have contributed to the facility-s success as this particular award category recognizes innovation and best practices in design,” said Mark Lee, general manager for UK operations at Active Power.
“PowerHouse addressed all of the end user-s requirements particularly in terms of meeting a very short deployment timeline,” continued Lee. “The system expedites time to deployment as it is factory integrated and tested, simplifying the installation and commissioning phases versus a conventional data center electrical room. More importantly, its high energy efficiencies contribute to a lower total cost of ownership for ARM.”
ARM-s data center received two other industry accolades earlier this year due to its cutting edge design. The data center was accredited and awarded , the highest level within the institute-s assessment program, and is the only facility in the UK to receive such recognition to date. This award demonstrates best in class capability for achieving high energy efficiencies and that the facility-s design can meet advanced standards of energy use.
The data center was also recognized at the gala held June 13, 2012, in London. ARM was awarded the European Award for New Data Center Facility for its innovation in design to meet both current and future needs and sensitivity of environmental impact. Organized by BroadGroup, a UK based data center consulting firm, the awards program is recognized as one of the premier industry accolades in Europe.
The installation at ARM follows a number of successful PowerHouse deployments in the UK that have received industry recognition including Capgemini Merlin and data centers. With a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.11 and innovative design, Capgemini Merlin received the Uptime Institute Green Enterprise IT Award in 2011 and the Datacenter Dynamics Leaders Award in 2010. Tesco has also earned a number of environmentally friendly and sustainability awards.
